The Tesla Model S was like the iPhone in that all other manufacturers now have to copy it. The difference is many don't realize that yet.

There's no analog to Android in this situation. That gives Tesla an advantage that Apple didn't have.

It's possible to imagine a future in which few other car manufacturers survive. Not saying that will happen, but remarkable it's possible.

I don’t know any manufacturer who thinks they don’t have to switch to all electric drive. Only question is how quickly.

A teslamorphic car isn't just electric though. There's also the software. That will be even harder for them.

@elonmusk doesn't care if everyone imitates his product and leaves Tesla in the dust... that was the point all along

I mean, who doesn't like winning? But if everyone imitates Tesla and Tesla is still the market leader, it's just double-winning.

iPhone had strong network effect. More users = more apps = more users. Better comparison is Sony Trinitron: eventually competition caught up

Also smartphone market grew enormously but car demand may in fact shrink due to ride sharing

I believe the biggest advantage of @TeslaMotors is actually infrastructure. By infrastructure I mean their Gigafactories and Superchargers.

Software/Hardware nowadays is cheap. But infrastructure (with that scale) is not something you can acquire or build yourself that easy.
