The most striking thing about it is how old it is. Have you seen that level of naturalism much earlier?
the same realism is found manuscripts dating back to 14th century.
The rise of it would make an interesting book. It's arguably the most visible sign of the rise of scientific thinking.
What's the oldest example you can think of off the top of your head?
well, the famous Vienna Dioscorides, made in 512, presents depictions that seem quite realistic: http://exhibits.hsl.virginia.edu/herbs/vienna-disocorides/ …
That's remarkable for its time, but it still has a heraldic flavor. Whereas the 16 c. image you tweeted first could have been 19 c.
FWIW the oldest naturalism I know of that's undateable stylistically (except by looking very close) is Dürer's.
