Make them open ended to encourage them to write (what happens next?).
Good trick for encouraging small children to read: write custom stories in which they are the heroes.

We print them out. In our case the kid is 5, so the print has to be big.

There have been small publishers printing customized books with your child's name, friends, toys etc added for decades.
