Probably the same instinctual root as obsession with "low hanging fruit", ie when hunting on the plains go for the weak/ill/young first.
One of the biggest moral mistakes people make is to conflate how open to attack something is with how bad it is.

The more vulnerable somthing appears, the more robust it must be to be surviving.

So, in a sense, the less open to attack something appears, the more vulnerable it might be. Example: hotels and AirBnB, money/gold and BTC.
