You are wrong there. Experienced investors are experts at detecting false confidence, and merely find it annoying.

Can they detect investors who fake humility by taking advice in a flattering way? (This works in academia at least!)

Sort of. They can't detect the flattery per se very well, but if you take a suggestion and run with it badly, you'll seem stupid to them.
