Renaming Google "Alphabet" is the kind of mistake you make when you don't get contradicted enough.

If a Google project fails, everyone notices. If an Alphabet company fails, most people have no idea what Alphabet actually is.

Perhaps "Renaming Google "Alphabet" is the kind of mistake you notice only when you have a greater than average level of familiarity." ?

Possible, but actually I am still not sure what to make of it. So I will watch and learn.

I wonder if the role of Shakespearean Fool could somehow be transplanted into the modern corporate environment.

I just got the "alpha bet" symbolism now even though they explained it in their announcement.

Outside of initial branding confusion, minimal downside, no? Supposedly lots of tax perks/flexibility in holding company structure.

Tax/flexibility could have been achieved without the renaming with less disruption

In the Pantheon of corporate blunders, this one ranks low. 90% of revenue & awareness still w/Google. Only IRS/side businesses care abt ABC

Curious, why was it a mistake? The parent co doesn't need the brand recognition - all they need is one of their "alpha" bets to succeed :)

They haven't renamed Google, they've just separated parts that didn't fit the Google Web platform branding as far as I know.
