Necessity is the mother of invention, and Google, like Microsoft before it, has insufficient necessity.
Google's dominance in search seems a cash cow almost as dangerous as Microsoft's dominance in operating systems was to them.

Hardly. Using a different search-engine is very lightweight; switching operations system is a huge undertaking, impossible for most people.
