Google's dominance in search seems a cash cow almost as dangerous as Microsoft's dominance in operating systems was to them.

Necessity is the mother of invention, and Google, like Microsoft before it, has insufficient necessity.

Except the structures and habits of search, like ML or ads, generalize better than PC operating systems.

Hardly. Using a different search-engine is very lightweight; switching operations system is a huge undertaking, impossible for most people.

People switched from Yahoo to Google. There is no high switching from Google to any other search engine

Agree. Need a search engine that will provide better results including the web, images, Videos, apps, social media etc.

Proper semantics will be the killer "The Starlord that was a comic in the UK in the 1970s, not the Starlord from Guardians of the Galaxy"

What if you take niche queries e.g. "where can i find *?" and specialize? Breakdown marketshare of google by queries. They can be disrupted

The parallel is perhaps closer between Google Search and MS Office, the two cash cows. Android and Windows are loss leaders

Add iOS to this list. Operating systems and software are "free" scalables used to sell products and advertising.
