The Republican base seems willing to believe anything their leadership tells them. It would be worth understanding why.pic.twitter.com/1bA3bN1ZwY

This is the behavior of zealots. What has turned them into zealots? Not the economy: the economy doesn't do that.

My guess is that they're driven by a deep, identity-based dislike of liberalism. They despise NPR culture, partly because it despises them.

That's why that remark about "deplorables" provoked such a reaction.

This is the best explanation I have found. Very simply put, we have a city vs rural problem. http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-reasons-trumps-rise-that-no-one-talks-about/ …

The question is why there's demand for that sort of propaganda in the first place.

It doesn't create its own demand, or it would have in e.g. SF too.

When you paint alternate viewpoints as "the enemy" you create a demand for people who feel general unease and concern. Oldest trick ever.

I do think the smugness in American liberalism is a problem, alienates a lot of people. See this article about it: http://www.vox.com/2016/4/21/11451378/smug-american-liberalism …

To suggest that any of us "despise" coal miners, truckers, farmers, steelworkers, etc. is the sort of stereotyping that leads to madness
