The Republican base seems willing to believe anything their leadership tells them. It would be worth understanding why.pic.twitter.com/1bA3bN1ZwY

This is the behavior of zealots. What has turned them into zealots? Not the economy: the economy doesn't do that.

My guess is that they're driven by a deep, identity-based dislike of liberalism. They despise NPR culture, partly because it despises them.

That's why that remark about "deplorables" provoked such a reaction.

I doubt that it’s only the republicans, the Democrat base isn’t much better…

The shift among republicans was 3x as big, which is consistent with other stats I've seen and @paulg's thesis

Nobody is telling the base that Russia is an ally or friendly. Not even Trump. That is a projection.

This is a persuasion failure by the left, which has tried to make Trump look bad with a drumbeat of Trump-Putin, Trump-Putin, Trump-Putin.

That backfired. Instead of making the base view Trump less favorably, it made them view Putin more favorably.

It is simpler than that. Obedience and loyalty are cornerstone of conservative behavior. The need for stability requires it.
