Their opinions tend to me not merely random but wrong, if they don't grasp the toy-for-rich -> tool-for-everyone progression.

Agree that's part of it but I don't think all $/convenience tradeoffs can be defended that way. e.g. I'd pay extra for pre-peeled oranges!
