I can afford to subscribe to every site, but I never do. The reason is not the cost, but that subscribing is such a mess.

If you subscribe via the iOS App Store (via the respective mobile apps), at least 2/3 of these are non issues.

I don't think that's the case. My NYT and WaPo subscriptions are <= the regular price.
