I now assume all subscriptions (a) require too much work to sign up (b) autorenew and (c) deliberately make it hard to cancel.

Been suggested for years. Aside from revenue-share etc, assumes no more ad-funded ('free') access. Tough to persuade Guardian, Mail etc

Yes! Possible scope for a service that unifies/streamlines subscriptions (online and off) & gives publishers some value in return?
