From what I've seen, they're in a better position than they realize.
From what one reads in the press, everyone seems to be pessimistic about France, including even the French.

it's just the french way, nothing is ever good enough "pas mal = not bad" is used more frequently than "good job" :-)

It’s true, but not new. Pessimism is part of the national identity in France.
