I hope it doesn't reflect polarization in the society which will be much more harder to fix

Unfortunately I fear it does.

Here in Australia it has been like this for decades, yet stable govt (mostly) persists. There's something else in US...
-
... system that is causing gridlock/lack of progress. I don't know enough to say what that might be. :-(
-
Lack of meaningful third parties. There are enough parties in the OZ parliament to force coalitions

why would we ever want to 'repair' anything with people who did stuff like shut down the government twice over a budget deal
-
you don't 'repair' an abusive situation; you get rid of the abusive parties

you gotta ask what changed? Citizens United and a flood of dark money that consolidated the parties. Get dark money out 2 heal.
-
my guess is change in mostly-centrist mass media to polarizing filters on social media. Pushes to extremes for 'engagement'
-
I agree with that but this is about votes. Try finding a republican who believes climate change is real. Purged out.
