This is a good time to remember that without immigration the US will only have 5% of the top people in each field. http://paulgraham.com/95.html

I don't think American nationalists realize what a small percentage we have of the world's population.

The US is big in money but small in people. And if we close the borders we won't even stay big in money.

did you bash Obama when he said no more Cuban refugees? Or just more fake outrage from the left?

Not even close to the same. That closed a loophole just made Cuban migrants the same as from other countries.

I feel that you may be missing the imbed bias currently within the tech industry that this hypothesis breeds. Disappointing.

The hypothesis that people everywhere are born with roughly the same distribution of innate ability breeds bias?

You didn't say in the essay that talent was necessarily equally distributed. You made a specific reference to the "best" programmers.

That's the basis of the idea that if you have x% of the population, (100 - x)% of the best people will be born elsewhere.

how wise is it to geographically concentrate bright people in a single place? Wouldn't the more distributed brightness be beneficial?

if you look at human history, great things happened whenever brightness was concentrated. Da Vinci's Florence, etc

true, but if brightness is not an intrinsic characteristic, but is somewhat "contagious" concentrating it may be a bad idea
