The interesting question is, how many Republican leaders have consciously had this strategy, and for how long?

Come to think of it, no one can have had it for that long, because even the Trump campaign expected to lose till the day of the election.

the limit now is how quickly can they get the Trump base on board with impeachment. House reps won't impeach until the base wants it.
-
House reps are very conscious of the fact that their base likes Trump more than they like their individual representative.

Will probably happen. Only guy that predicted Trump win also predicted his impeachment.http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/15/politics/allan-lichtman-professor-predicts-trump-impeachment-erin-burnett/ …

I Can't imagine that Trump and his staff didn't realize that. Hence the question: what compelled them to pick Pence as VP?

I've said that in the past. Worst is... Pence may be more presidential but his ideals are possibly even worse!

another GOP strategy might be to keep Trump in office as the ideal "bad cop" during negotiations while GOP plays "good cop"

don’t think it was the Republican strategy, but that’s ultimately what’s going to happen…not sure about the resign part.

Don't you think that risks damaging the republican brand? Nixon resigning had to effect the overall perception of the party...
