Reading The Lord of the Rings out loud to my 7 yo is like doing a diff between written and spoken English.

we forget that language was first spoken for a millennia before it was formalized in text. It hits our minds differently when spoken.
I think even in literate societies spoken language is (or should be) upstream of written.

I'm a voracious consumer of NPR and audiobooks for a reason. I only buy texts because it's easier to navigate my notes.
