The reason not to invest in a company that doesn't own its IP is not that you don't get a share of it. It's because the company will fail.

Noticing many startups licensing core IP in exchange for equity, still fall under the same situation ?
Depends how much equity and where the IP came from. Google did it but the answers were little, and the founders.
