If boys' toy preferences are learned rather than innate, I wish I could figure out how and use it to make them learn other things.

learning is a deeply social activity. What you see in toy preferences is the social subtext of our culture.

my wife and I homeschool our kids, don't have a TV, and see few stereotypical preferences that we can't trace to our own influence.

with exp with 4 yo f and 3 yo m, toy preferences are certainly learned. Limiting screen time is key. Online branding has influence.

although kids observation of their peer's choices and actions is also strong influence. Spend more time playing with them yourself.

'boy' is a gender pronoun, so your statement here is really a tautology.

don't mn to snark. I mean to point out that by first specifying the gender you're unwittingly revealing the "teaching."
