I always found that the strategy of learning material from textbooks and then letting the lecturer put it into context worked well.
But too often I see lectures taken as an opportunity to transcribe a lecture-note textbook to be studied later; worst of both worlds.
I make an exception for video lectures/recitations/tutorials. Rewind rocks. @bitemyapp
lectures can be dynamic if done right, I do call/response when I give talks and adjust based on how people are doing.
And folks who take advantage of the offer get the most out of it, yet you're Q&A volume is limited by time no matter what.
Most lecturers are not, however, Alonzo Church.
one advantage is "synchronized learning", it's helpful to turn to your classmate and say "did you understand that?"
that's not unique to lectures. just read the same book :)
I've got a couple of semester left in school and still can't recall a single useful lecture
Thanks! Now I can quote someone else when I want to say what I think.
the advantages are on the creation not consumption side - many people are much better speakers than writers
I think it's all how you ingest & retain information best... modern understanding of learning & memory has taught us a lot.
solving different problems. Lecture: motivation. Book: efficient transmission of some types of knowledge
Darwin was a hater. Bet he never got the opportunity to sit through a lecture featuring a slick PowerPoint presentation.
@aparanjape
Ofc I disagree
.@paulg @kobusehlers It all depends on how one learns - https://goo.gl/uUmycT
think it depends on lecturer but more often than not, reading much more effective
with the exception that you can lightly multitask while listening to a lecture (e.g. a podcast) but must concentrate while reading
