Why do you need algorithms to catch fake news? Surely there's a power law distribution. Why not use humans to catch the worst instances?

If you want to avoid accusations of bias, have a nonprofit third-party organization do it.

In today's highly politicised... everything... can you name a nonprofit 3rd-party organisation universally considered unbiased?

real issue isn't just fake news but giving everyone a personalized really where everyone agrees with them and hates other side.

taking profit motive away does not make this apolitical. it would likely bring even weirder politics into it. who funds/leads it?

You've got to find the 3 to 4 public figures left in America that are respected by both sides and put them in charge of the org.

The problem is, the culture war has become so divisive, there aren't that many credible third parties left.

you'll still have accusations of bias - humans are inherently bias. "Misleading" stories are the worst offender of bias.

Facebook should allow users to "Trust" fact checkers. Politifact, Snopes, Fox News, whatever. Then automatically flag based on them.

Thought on that. We know issues of defining "truth", but there'd be way to determine "no truth" (falsacionism: Popper). Human-algo?

fake news is just an extreme example of broader problem of content that prevents people sharing common reality. Is Mother Jones fake?
