The cultural dissonance between the values YC promotes vs the values HN perpetuates are staggering.

I struggle to understand how @paulg / @sama are so outwardly progressive, and yet so comfortable with the garbage fire in their back yard.

Would you say Reddit or Twitter "perpetuate" certain "values?" Or just that the ideas are those of whoever signs up?

Wouldn’t you say Twitter’s garbage fire and lack of moderation is its single biggest issue? Source: every tech pundit ever?

Possibly. But I don't struggle to understand how Jack can be so outwardly progressive and yet Twitter users aren't.

At an interpersonal level, I agree. But at a leadership level, responsible for community, many(?) find it equally confusing

No one who's run a sufficiently popular site with open signups would be confused.

I do think though that both Twitter and HN are early versions lacking critical features to contain trolls.

I don't know what these features are, but I think future generations of users will be shocked at what we put up with.

… and that those tools begin with leadership setting the tone and culture of acceptability through action OR inaction

Why don't you start the Twitter replacement? I'm almost certain it exists.

I (genuinely) respect the “if you don’t like it then make something better” sentiment – just wish HN was less crappy to people

I actually think there has been a cultural shift away from social networks. Slack communities feel more relevant these days

true they are more focused and specific, but for unspecific and more general topics? Twitter is like a pub, but too crowded

not sure. The value of twitter *used* to be in the same sorts of naturally formed niche communities
