Way (way) back I had to use a Pascal implementation that buffered output. It was impossible to write nontrivial programs in.

Squeak buffers output. I wrote an unbuffered Transcript for Cuis Smalltalk because of what you say. It was mostly ignored.

it’s not the printf. It’s the grep/sort/uniq/awk/perl you can use to analyze the 1 GB of output. And not disrupting threads/RT much.
