When teaching kids I avoid memorization. E.g. my 7 yo knows lots of tricks for mental arithmetic, but doesn't "know his times tables."

memorization is no replacement for understanding, but some things need to be lighting fast—i.e., memorized

read Daniel Kahneman if you're open to changing your mind on memorization. Feynman practiced while idle for similar reasons

Typical unreflective opinion- repetition of some common stuff like mult tables and poems helps one see patterns..v impt in many ways

I like both. Memorizing huge amounts of math & words seems to strengthen synapses + automaticity is a *gift.*

I see the value in knowing both actually. Muscle memory for basic math is crucial once he/she gets to Algebra.

I think memorization is valuable, but agree that e.g. Trachtenberg multiplication is far more valuable.

I often wonder why we don’t teach the ‘divides tables’ too. Useful for estimating and mental arithmetic.

you should think of tables as 'caching' problem, not fetching from memory. Speeds up mental processing

do you find that sufficient? eg, does he have problems with multiplying large numbers outside the domain of the union of the tricks?

agree with the sentiment but I think near-instant single digital math is a crucial skill and a mental model of its own.

for me, instantly knowing math (and estimating large numbers) at age 3-4 enabled a very statistical/probebalistic world outlook

You need to teach them memory tricks like method of loci and major system, a deck of cards then becomes childs play

Will you eventually introduce times tables? It seems counter-intuitive.m, but some school systems have abandoned them.
