Darwin had haters - both those who did and didn't understand his work. Those who understood, hated it for its implications.

Indeed, they understood him because they were the Soviet agents he railed against.

How do you quantify understanding? The activation of equivalent neural patheways in both the writer's and reader's brain? An exam?
-
Also, the method of evaluating understanding changes depending on the topic. Math: did you prove it correctly? vs Politics: \_(ツ)_/¯

Darwin was proposing a new scientific theory that *obliterated* the the religious beliefs and illusions of our society at the time.
-
Most religious individuals (still) do not understand science and they reject it before trying to understand it.
-
Challenging the "belief" of someone causes an immediate rejection—people want to avoid that Cognitive Dissonance thing.
-
People didn't try to understand it—challenging people's "beliefs" makes them even more uncomfortable than challenging a philosophy
-
A communism is a political philosophy that is not difficult to understand. It is thought based. Not belief based.
-
McCarthy did support communism but he did not write the manifesto. Also, he made people feel "politically" threatened.
-
...And if now tells us anything...everyone thinks they're more a politician than scientist. And I'm sure anti-intellectualism plays..
-
...a key role in this, particularly in Darwin's case
