(E.g. Darwin in his day had a lot of what we'd now call haters, but zero of them understood him or his work.)

(Whereas Joe McCarthy also had a lot of haters, but they understood him very well.)

all depends on the levels of knowledge and professionalism! Equal levels rarely exist!

Weak? I like and dislike a range of people I feel I understand and don’t understand, with no correlation.

I believe the dis/like actually stems from if you understand their motivation for their work or not.

Pretty weak. I find people who dislike each other inherently dislike the others work. You could call is perspective based analysis.

understanding their work is a necessary but not sufficient condition in not disliking someone

I'd guess there is a wide range. So many variables but a primary one likely would be openness and willingness to learn. Great thought

add "depending on socio/economic status" might provide a strong correlation, otherwise my bet: weak-positive correlation

Dislike of someone can blind you to their work. Trump's focus on the "left behind" working class is misunderstood by the coastals.
