have you walked him through Feynman's derivation of trigonometry from counting? That was a hit with the best of my young students.

it's in the Feynman lectures, volume 1, chapter 22. http://www.feynmanlectures.caltech.edu/I_22.html Starts with counting, derives sin^2 X + cos^2 X = 1
