Alt view 3: the other real problem is that not enough of us are willing to pay for news, so we get the click-bait ad-driven news we deserve.
-
-
Twitter or fb should have built this in long ago since that is where I get most links from. Blendle is closest I have seen though
-
most people don't want to pay for news. If news is important to you, most likely you're price inelastic, thus sub model.
-
I am price inelastic. I am not work inelastic.
-
if true, then you will pay for subscriptions, set to auto renew, and never think about it again as you read any article!
-
Having to remember I subscribed to something is work.
-
Also, subscribing itself is work. On one site I checked recently it was 23 fields IIRC.
-
this is true, but there's usually an initial set up cost for any utility: power, Internet, insurance, information, etc.
-
There is, and because of that I'll only do it if forced to. 1 power co can make me; 30 pubs can't.

so you'd like the publishers you already read to offer per article micropayments rather than downloading a separate app?
-
Yes, that would be ideal.

how would you know which articles you want to buy before you buy them?
-
A combo of seeing the first part and the price being cheap enough that you're ok guessing.
-
paraphrasing Churchill: bundles are the worst option, except for all the others.
-
ad networks are amazing micropayment infrastructure - could be converted to treat us as customers vs eyeballs
-
would have to re-architect the entire system and tech to reward value over tonnage, but sure.

there's a WP plugin already to add micropayments to your site, other integrations coming up - cc cofounder
