it really depends, some kids need structure and discipline, while some need freedom and emotional support, not all kids are same.

Usually parents educate according to their own experiences, it's very hard to take yourself out of equation. But that's the key.

my parents pushed me for piano lessons, but let computer science pull me. I didn’t become a pianist.
