I will go out on a limb and say Austin has zero chance of being a serious startup hub without Uber and Lyft. (I am an investor in neither.)

Austin did not ban anything. Uber & Lyft drew a line in the sand, lost a bet, & are making good their threat of leaving.
-
Goal of rules is to remove part time drivers from supply. Austin gets what it voted for. Up to them now.

fair enough but to argue Lyft and Uber are necessary for innovation seems like a stretch. And they weren't banned exactly right?
-
they just don't want to pay for background checks. This seems more like a negotiation with two sides.
-
This had absolutely zero to do with the cost of checks (they spent 10x the cost to check all austin drivers on election)
-
what was the issue if not cost?
-
Justifying their dubious positions on labor and employees.
-
mind elaborating? Curious what you mean.
-
the more they have to tell their “contractors” to do, the more they look like employees
-
fascinating. I had missed that issue but makes sense. cc

They were not “banned” in ANY sense of the word. They left of their own accord.

Austin didn't "ben" them. Uber & Lyft chose to leave rather than comply. Why don't you ask Uber & Lyft to comply?
