I will go out on a limb and say Austin has zero chance of being a serious startup hub without Uber and Lyft. (I am an investor in neither.)

My first reaction to the idea of visiting Austin is "How would I get around?"

No; the height was probably reached back in the 90s, when SV people started to expect Internet access everywhere.

SV did ok without them for a few decades or so.

It did ok without cellphones too. But that is *very* different from banning them now.

Austin did not ban anything. Uber & Lyft drew a line in the sand, lost a bet, & are making good their threat of leaving.

Goal of rules is to remove part time drivers from supply. Austin gets what it voted for. Up to them now.

.@paulg so Austin is the 14th biggest startup hub in the world but also has zero chance at being "serious?"http://www.citylab.com/tech/2015/07/the-worlds-leading-startup-cities/399623/ …

fair point, but by same token, too early to write off? It's a (temporary) loss but startup volume is up & 150 people move here daily

I never said instantly. But as years pass it gets increasingly implausible to be both a startup hub and not have U/L.

U/L in Austin is more about local politics than innovation. Folks outside of Austin didn't see that unfold but it was ugly here.

The fact that Paul Graham thinks that ... and that others think that (Forbes/WSJ) ... means damage was done, regardless

@paul LMK when people stop moving here. Also I'll bet you 5:1 uber will be operating in Austin before end of year.

Sometimes dumb regulations can protect a new startup from incumbents, but it's so rare it's not in the top 20 sources of ideas.
