One of the biggest threats to your startup are junior people who bring the germ of big company bogusness.

@paulg wouldn’t ‘senior’ people bring more bureaucratic bogus..?

@echezbro They are usually aware of that danger. They know startups are different.

@paulg @echezbro I'd say sometimes rather than usually. However many senior folks are hired later stage anyway.

@paulg That’s not just coming from junior people; that’s more likely to come from “seniors” who think they know how to do things.

@tedneward But both they and the founders hiring them tend to be aware of that danger.

@paulg Ehhhh….. Not always. And juniors typically have less preconceptions and less investment in doing things any particular way.

@paulg "when is it safe to hire someone from Goldman or McKinsey" is a big decision for startups

@tommyrva @paulg In my case it was, "when it is safe to hire someone from a big Telco". Answer: NEVER.

@carribeiro @paulg interestingly had a great experience w/ that. Also believe folks from McKinsey etc have huge value -but where/when = hard

@tommyrva @paulg *Who* is more important than when/where. I'd hire someone from a big Telco despite (not because) his previous experience.

@tommyrva @paulg I agree that I over generalized to make a point. Hiring experienced people is important. Hey, I'm 50, I'm still working :-)

@tommyrva @paulg The problem is that many inexperienced founders don't know what to look for in experienced hires. That brings two problems:

      8. Carlos Ribeiro‏ @carribeiro 7 Mar 2016

@tommyrva 1) hiring for position: "This guy held this job so I'll hire him". Often bad as the hire brings big co practices before time.

@tommyrva 2) hiring for potential: "this guy never had a chance let's hire him". It may turn out the hire was never very good to start with.

@paulg Ultimately is it better to work at a big company before founding your own? That way, you can see what does and doesn't work.

@JakeCahan @paulg work at a small one and see how a company is made, you can't learn that at a large company, there far past that point.
