For startups the default answer to biz dev deals should be no. They almost never turn out to be worth the distraction.

@ivelini Perhaps: one where neither co is clearly the customer.

@paulg insightful. I presume lead generation, telemarketing, outsourced field sales services, channel partnerships all qualify?

@paulg I think this is a corollary of thinking about Buxton Indices. Here's how Dijkstra described it:pic.twitter.com/YQiZmYkv8g

@paulg Was thinking growth rate, engagement levels, too. Once heard that you rarely need more than 50 for something like B2B SaaS.

@paulg there are big counterexamples - e.g. AOL and Yahoo deals were far more important for Google than people tend to realize cc @pmarca

Random bizdev is the worst. "We should work together.. on stuff.. doing THINGS!" Like what, specifically? "Our best people are on it!"

@paulg Depends on how you define startup. Once a little product/market fit and traction are gained biz dev can add a lot of cred/distro.

@paulg That's true for *all* biz dev deals. Most never come to fruition, and of the remainder, few deliver results.
