In the movie 24 Hour Party People, a band tests songs on car radios before releasing them. Anyone know if a real band did this?

@paulg Ok, looks like I should rephrase this. Anyone know the first band to test their songs on car radios before releasing them?

@paulg Motown Records deliberately did this in the '60s, mixing records such that they sounded good in car radios.

@paulg Hope this link works: it says Motown rigged a special speaker in its studio in the '60s to test car sound. http://books.google.com/books?id=FQSdu0PJ7vkC&pg=PT363&lpg=PT363&dq=motown+%22car+radio%22+mixed&source=bl&ots=qKTOVtjeDa&sig=0JVMZ8I5Sf9ZfzaFRDabnb4COpc&hl=en&sa=X&ei=3-X-Ubz2H9CuyAHAsYDQDQ&ved=0CDgQ6AEwBg …

@paulg Watch the movie Once, set in Dublin. In it, musician Glen Hansard does the exact same thing. Oscar winning music too.

@paulg My audio professor in college recommended doing this, as well as testing on various crappy speakers. Target LCD of speaker quality.

@paulg Testing music too much in cars is one reason for the loudness war which is making modern music sound like crap. Unfortunate ...

@paulg I would assume most bands do the "hello kitty earbud test". Mix the music on nice monitors but test on the common, cheaper hardware.
