This is fascinating. Steve started a tablet project because he was annoyed by a guy at Microsoft. Then after they made a tablet demo, he asked if they could shrink it to pocket size. And when he saw that demo he said: pause the tablet, let's make a phone.

Best part about this is that the person channeled back to BillG that SJ said they were going to add pen and touch to Macintosh. This bit of "useful idiot" was classic spy v. spy stuff that definitely confused matters. BTW, I am 2 posts way from this story on hardcore software.

Yep, if I recall correctly, Jobs was pissed off that the Microsoft guy was at his house (Their wives were friends) and was all up in his grill about how MSFT was going to build a phone.
