Something I taught 10 yo: Instead of competing with everyone else for the attention of the median person, it's often worthwhile to make something just for smart people. They may be a small fraction of the population, but there are still a lot of them in total.

Making something for smart people lets you work without compromises. And you're not completely giving up the possibility of a mass audience, because things often spread from them to the rest of the population. E.g. The Lord of the Rings.

Another way to explain it is, work to impress people whose opinion actually matters to you.
But curious if you also discuss what you mean by “smart” and if you’ve thought about risks of implicitly oversimplifying it (as an objective number, fixed at birth, or easy to recognize).

I get the idea about targeting a niche. But what is the meaning of "smart people" ?

This strategy makes a lot of sense if one wants to make a large impact, because most of the progress in this world is instigated by smart, hardworking people with high integrity. So just by helping such people immensely, one can amplify one’s own impact. Tremendously satisfying.

Agreed and it is a simple concept.
An example is how Lamborghini doesn’t do TV advertisement.
The target audience doesn’t sit around watching TV all day. People that do sit watching TV all day will never afford a Lamborghini.
