What's the reason behind this disinterest?

I would say that movies are becoming less relevant for popular culture - relatively speaking. TV series (Netflix, HBO, Disney+ etc), computer games (Fortnite etc), Twitch streaming seems to have a growing presence in culture pushing out movies.

I think also with the advent of social media and Instagram we have access to celebrities lives whenever they post, vs before it was limited to an awards show or tabloids. The main shows like Oscars, etc are less relevant now and need to reinvent their playbook.
