Files (.psd, .docx, etc) are almost the next floppy disks. Your kids are going to wonder what the heck "files" were.

we hardly save files in our personal systems anymore.

The abstraction is still relevant

A basic unit of abstraction that's not relevant to most people. Unix sockets are also a basic unit of abstraction; most people will never know about them.

Sure, it's easy to imagine end users not knowing about files. In fact that's arguably already the case with iOS.

It would seem weird that the concept of files disappears, but all the limitations due to our hardware probably will (ability to access them from anywhere, size limits, difficult sharing...), on the other hand, no one will remember what a usb key was in 10 years.

Are we shifting to a system where every type of data is stored in a single structure, searchable by type of string and bits but not quantifiable in different files.

You'll always need an easy way of defining the abstraction type that works when there's hundreds of instances. Apart short-form text, I can't think of anything that would work better

The average non-developer might just think about interacting with the content, instead of caring about the container ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I recall chats with fellow developers in the 1980's, and again elsewhere in 90's, about how files were too coarse-grained and surely hypertext with (even binary) chunks that live in databases would soon replace them. Likely reason it didn't happen is here:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worse_is_better …

I also often look to Star Trek for UI hints. NOT for grand vision of future, which is error-prone, but rather its ruthless elimination of unnecessary scene time to fit complex stories into 46 air minutes for casual audiences. e.g., holodeck episodes often appeal to file metaphor.
