Do you think that is because startup success is not entirely dependent on the founders? I.e. sometimes startups just don't work because of factors outside the founders control?

Yes, there is also a lot of sheer luck, which is by definition impossible to predict.

Look whether they have failed miserably earlier in an endevour that they really, really, really craved. Since they are still standing in that YC interview, you betcha they are de-sentisized now. The hard part is determing the intensity of that "really".
