Killing people is wrong not enough?

Proponents of the death penalty obviously don’t think so. But some of them might be swayed by the number of innocent people who are executed.

You mean in America, right? I mean, here in the U.K. it seems as though it’s still very much about whether it’s ok to kill murderers.

I think “in practice” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. This essay makes a lot of assumptions.

Not really arguing with the conclusion, but why is it then ok to put innocent people in prison for life? Yes, you can potentially reverse the conviction, but that's small comfort for somebody freed 40 years later, or for somebody who died in prison.

Judicial mistakes will always occur, as in any human activity. At least there could partial redressing in case of prison sentences, as opposed to executions. Note that i'm not contrary to the death penalty on general grounds, but the mistake argument is just too compelling.

The intro alone is perfect. Many people have concerns about giving AI the power to control deadly force (weapons, cars). But the same logic should apply to granting deadly force to similarly underperforming classifier systems like e.g. Justice

I’m not sure it’s the “real” reason but it’s plenty reason enough to end it in my opinion. The Anthony Ray Hinton story is enough to sell you on that.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34964905-the-sun-does-shine# …

I feel the same way. But I also feel that the state being able to kill with societal sanction is morally reprehensible and is a compelling argument in and of itself.

Paul, we need the Death Penalty in our statutes. What would we do, for example, if a more robust 9/11 conspiracy left us prisoners caught on US soil but co-conspirators able to take and execute hostages elsewhere until we released those whom we caught.
