I just got an email from Wolfram Alpha saying my card is about to expire. I tried to log in, but don't remember the password. I probably have it written down somewhere, but I haven't used Alpha for a while, so I gave up.

Applications which are not likely to be used on a daily basis should provide Single Sign On options. This reduces the number of passwords out there (helps with security and user experience).

That is a dangerous thing to rely upon, because credit card issuers will attempt to help you keep your accounts active by making pathways available for businesses you deal with to update your credentials without you needing to act.

This is common? I have never seen or heard this before

Maybe you knew… but stripe does guess the new expiration dates when a card expire. As a merchant, I never have to deal with expired cards using them. You know Stripe? It’s a great company

Really? Do you have a source? I would imagine that’s a violation of the credit card ToS. Why allow guessing expiration date and not zip code?
