Was trying to remember @ycombinator motto: Make something people want & Make something people need that sound pretty similar. But it seems that ‘want’ could be really influenced by marketing yet ‘need’ is something fundamental. @paulg is it on purpose that you focus on ‘want’?pic.twitter.com/gXvnfN4MRg

I deliberately chose want rather than need because it's advice for businesses. If there's something people need but don't want, they won't buy it. Plus it's easy to lie to yourself about what people need, but you can't lie to yourself about what they want.

That's so interesting that "want" sounds subjective but is more objective (do they buy?), while "need" sounds objective but is subjective (who decides what we really need...).

My belief is that needs/ wants are outdated, and people buy through emotion and how it makes them feel.

Selling want is harder, selling need is easier. But, want is more rewarding than the need.

If we create something that purely addresses a need, it may be useful but not desirable. It will only be successful if it has no competition. Where in today’s world do we see products with no competition? But at the same time a want should address a need as well right ?

Anyone who has ever worked in a stressful environment knows that it is so much better to be wanted than to be needed. The worst situation is being needed to do a job but not receiving even the slightest hint that anyone wants you around. The same goes for products.

          Replying to @hcetamd @paulg and

There are many products that people need but everyone absolutely hates to use. Sure, they might earn a lot of money, but the lack of want is a sign that they'll switch to a competitor. If they actually *want* to use it, they'll have incentives to integrate it into processes.
