It’s not clear that much can be drawn from that. Essays are fairly short and the act of writing one doesn’t require a lot tool-wise. Managing notes is a different kind of task. I wonder what he used for his book on Lisp?
On Lisp I wrote mostly on paper on legal pads, and then typed in later. By the time I wrote Ansi Common Lisp I had a computer at home, so that I typed straight into the computer.

I learned programming while studying English in college after watching a friend move text around like magic in vim. Emacs LISP was my first language. I hesitate to use it now because I wind up spending more time hacking my editor than writing.
