A data point about rewriting: the last essay I wrote (http://paulgraham.com/richnow.html ) took 27 days to write, and only one sentence in the final version is the same in the first draft.

I like that low-tech approach. Very easy, and very easy to find your previous draft.

My longtime co-author and I used to use TrackChanges but now just rewrite without checking who did what, even though sometimes we unwittingly change back and forth some. As old friends who like cute phrases, we know we need each others' editing, so there are no pride issues.
