A data point about rewriting: the last essay I wrote (http://paulgraham.com/richnow.html ) took 27 days to write, and only one sentence in the final version is the same in the first draft.

I can't even imagine how this must work. Presumably you've got some plugins, maybe something for markdown? Or do you not need formatting at all while writing?
I don't need any formatting. I just write ascii text and run it through fmt.

@paulg here. the problem with word processors is that all bells and whistles get in the way of the words. the hard part is expressing your thoughts in the clearest language, not in the formatting. - Show replies
