A data point about rewriting: the last essay I wrote (http://paulgraham.com/richnow.html ) took 27 days to write, and only one sentence in the final version is the same in the first draft.

I can't even imagine how this must work. Presumably you've got some plugins, maybe something for markdown? Or do you not need formatting at all while writing?

I don't need any formatting. I just write ascii text and run it through fmt.

wow, not even vim? But I get it. My first resume was written on emacs and was called karthee_resume.c. It was for graduate school application and the prof replied that I am missing a .h include file :-)
