Why / how would gdp miscount impact of software and services today vs previous generations?

GDP numbers are likely undercounts, but were so in the past as well - hard question to know when the undercount was largest. Mid-20th century had pretty good growth relative to before and after, which is possibly a problem for your analysis. Interesting article in any case.

Doesn’t more competition lead to higher productivity for the industry?

Does GDP account for things that are given away for free? Most software infrastructure is open source, and therefore nominally captures none of the value it creates.
-
Related followup, if software patents were much stronger, and software inventions weren't instantly commoditized, would we see a rise in the GDP of software? Even if people were overall poorer?

I would all three. Proportionally: Other countries: 15% Older tech gains: 10% GDP miscounting: 75%

Seems like the problem is that demand in the wake of the GFC has been very low imopic.twitter.com/PI1QeNMRvW

It's absolutely the later. The services inside an iphone would cost $100,000 or more in 1980, and yet your cell contract contributes only $100 per month to GDP. Tech innovation enables politicians to print money without price inflation.
