Don't know about you but I also tend to find at least one or two new essay topics .
In the middle phase of essay writing, you transform an essay which all seems vaguely wrong into one with a few hotspots of obvious wrongness.

I initially tweeted a reply about how this happens to me more often with fiction than with nonfiction; but after writing out the tweets and staring at the result it went from vaguely wrong to obviously wrong, so I deleted it.

Also, your fiction is sometimes closer to essay writing than your essays.
