Something I explained to 12 yo: The biggest startups are always where two basic forces meet. E.g. Facebook = social relationships + internet. But these ideas are rarely found by looking for such intersections. They start as side projects you only later realize have this quality.

Other than the direct "what are the two basic forces?", what angle of questioning helps figure out the two forces?

I think substituting a proxy for at least one of the basic forces helps. For instance, LinkedIn = Resume + Internet with the resume or CV being a proxy for your one's professional experience.
