We're rapidly approaching the point where "[X] is a New Religion because some people seem weirdly passionate about it" is becoming incoherent. https://www.axios.com/americans-less-religious-gallup-poll-3a7fa738-a431-45a9-8185-44267c49d19d.html … You can't just call every doctrine you don't fully subscribe to "the new religion."pic.twitter.com/xLorDvpyR6

And you can't say that something is NOT like a religion just because you like it and dislike religion.

let's take two examples of modern quasi-religions: (1) soulcycle and (2) social-justice politics 1. the former is clearly a lifestyle/hobby. the pandemic happened. ppl stopped going to SC and started peleton. did they ~convert~? no, they just continued a hobby, it was fine

      2. the latter is more complicated but i think we're on firmer ground thinking of SJP, not as an ersatz religion, but rather as one of many US social movements that have drawn elements from religion without ever becoming a church or faith

When people say something is a new religion, that's all they mean — that it has elements of religion that make it work differently from other social phenomena.

If the point is just to hint at other social correlates that one might look for, this approach works fine. But what if one is trying to judge/set extent of 1st amendment protections?

Only the court systems can decide what is or isn't a religion and what deserves protections from the 1st Amendment. They would have to use all available evidence and precedent. Otherwise it's just an opinion.

And it doesn’t need to literally form a church to have religious aspects.

i think this leads to a place where a history of, say, the 19th century would describe the suffrage movement and abolition as religions, and bicycles as a religion, and the rise of mechanical engineering as a religion. i don't think that's useful? but smart ppl seem to disagree!

What makes something seem religious to me is when people who raise logical questions are attacked rather than responded to. I think that happens fairly often with people on the SJW side.
